Prom is about looking back at the past four years and remembering all the great times you had. But prom is also about looking to the future — about the excitement of fulfilling all your dreams, goals and ambitions in life yet to come.

But first things first: Make sure you have a future to celebrate. You can do that by making a pledge not to drink and drive. Sadly, that’s a reality for thousands of teens annually, who die in car accidents and from excessive drinking and drug overdoses.

Unfortunately, many teens ignore that message, because they feel that they’re invincible, unstoppable — that nothing can ever hurt them. Feeling unstoppable is great when you need that extra boost of confidence to tackle a final exam or ace that job interview — but it can have deadly consequences when it comes to choosing how to behave when alcohol is a factor.

And not just alcohol. There are other dangers out there that are just as deadly to your future. Dangers like suicide. Drug overdoses. Violence. That’s why SADD — formerly known as Students Against Drunk Driving — today proudly stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions.

That’s because we know it’s a complicated world out there, one filled with exciting opportunities, yes, but also dangers. We changed our name to reflect these new realities. In fact, drunk driving is just one culprit that threatens the lives of our fellow teens across the nation. The underlying cause of these threats is irresponsible, lazy or just plain dumb choices. Dumb choices like taking that strange pill your “friend” is pushing on you. Accepting that beer at the party. Driving too fast because your classmates are egging you on from the back seat. Those things aren’t fun. They may seem fun or thrilling at the time, but it takes just one second to turn what seems to be a harmless thrill into a tragedy.

And many of them are dumber than you think. For example, did you know that during 2009, nearly 13,000 people died in drunk driving-related crashes? In that same year, 1.2 million teenagers died from drug overdoses. Our goal is not to downplay the dangers of drunk driving. Instead, we hope this fact — and our name change — highlights the other dangers that threaten to do much more than spoil your good time. They can spoil — or even end — your life.

There’s nothing wrong with partying to celebrate four years of hard work and great friends — just do it responsibly. That’s why Prom Guide recommends reserving a limousine. Besides arriving home alive, it will add to the memories of the night.

Prom night is about sharing memories of the past while making a toast to the future. Help us make sure you and your fellow students have a future to toast.
